Gift Of Life Organ and Tissue Donation

In 2011, National Council of Jewish Women of Canada partnered with Trillium Gift of Life Network Program, thereafter this program was approved by National Council as one of our initiatives.

Trillium Gift of Life Network (a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario), plans, promotes, coordinates and supports organ and tissue donation and transplantation across Ontario. Other communities with their provincial Tissue and Transplant agencies are responsible for organ and tissue donation.

Through education NCJWC dispels the myths that Jews cannot donate organs and reiterates that saving a life is the greatest “Mitzvah” a Jew can perform.

An interesting fact is that one person can save up to 8 lives and enhance as many as 75 more. There are no prohibitions as to which organ you can donate.

Educational programs and seminars are held throughout Canada. Check with your province to see how you can be a donor or for more information.

Organ Donation Event

Winnipeg Section regularly hosts an organ donation event in conjunction with Organ Donation week in April. Past events include a panel discussion featuring an Orthodox Rabbi, an organ recipient, and a transplant physician, and an extremely successful “assisted organ donation sign up station”, at the Jewish Community Centre.
